LEAN TIMES FOR BEEF INFORMATION CENTRE: MOST OFFICES TO BE SHUT BY MID-2005
CP Wire, David Paddon, March 24, 2004
Toronto -- The Beef Information Centre is, according to this story, closing
all but two of its offices by June 2005 as the marketing arm of Canada's
cattle industry copes with a sharp drop in funding due to slower sales
following the mad cow crisis.
Margaret Thibeault, a spokeswoman for the organization, was cited as saying
Wednesday that the Regina, Halifax and Winnipeg offices have already closed,
and offices in Montreal and Vancouver will shut as their leases expire.
That will leave the Beef Information Centre, which is the beef industry's
liaison with food retailers, restaurants and consumers, with offices in
Calgary and Toronto.
The belt-tightening in the 23-employee organization is needed as funding
through the Calgary-based Canadian Cattlemen's Association is expected to be
cut in half to about $3 million a year due to slower sales of live cattle.
