Bangkok, Mar 26 (IANS) :

In a bid to ease the traffic and keep the capital clean, the Thai government
has said it would round up all the elephants roaming the streets and send them
to a pound, reports Xinhua.

A command centre has been set up at the National Park where 20 elephant
handlers and 10 trucks would be on standby, The Nation newspaper Friday quoted the
director general of the department Somchai Pienstaporn as saying.

Elephants spotted roaming the streets would be confiscated by the centre and
transported to other provinces.

A 24-hour helpline has been established for civilians to report roaming
jumbos on the street.

However, there are no specific rules against the owners except confiscating
their elephants.

Known as the kingdom of elephant, Thailand has long been troubled by a large
number of the pachyderms roaming the city streets.
