STARVING and doomed one month, reprieved the next, time is again running out
for hundreds of rare and endangered animals in bureaucratic limbo on Tipperary
Station as the Northern Territory Government looks into the legalities of
putting them down.
A briefing from the NT Parks and Wildlife Commission, obtained by The Weekend
Australian, says the commission is seeking clarification from the federal
Government on whether animals listed under the Convention on International Trade
in Endangered Species can legally be shot. The briefing notes that the
Tipperary owners do not require permission to shoot animals at the station that are
not listed under CITES.
The news is the latest in a string of blows for David Gill, the British owner
of a north Queensland private zoo, who bought 100 of Tipperary's rarest
animals from former owner Warren Anderson.
