The Otago Hunt club insists its decision not to pay for the treatment of one
of its harrier hounds, injured after falling down a 30m cliff last Thursday,
is not about money.
It emerged yesterday the club was the owner of the 8-month-old pup, named
May, that needed rescuing from a Tunnel Beach cliff. The hound, one of nearly 20
the club owns, had a badly fractured elbow after its fall and was in need of a
$500 orthopaedic operation.
An Otago Hunt club member, present during the three-hour rescue operation,
decided to sign over the dog to the SPCA once the injury was confirmed, rather
than pay for the operation.
However, when contacted yesterday, Otago Hunt president Anne Beattie insisted
the decision to give up the hound was for purely practical reasons. The pup's
injury meant it would be unable to hunt effectively as an adult, and would be
targeted by other hounds.
