KIGALI, Rwanda The first thing that used to come to people's minds when they 
thought of Rwanda was gorillas. The 1988 movie "Gorillas in the Mist," which 
was filmed here, helped solidify that view and draw tourists eager to spot the 
endangered primates in the wild.

But all that changed in 1994 when Hutu militias on a rampage killed 800,000 
of their countrymen in 100 days of slaughter. Not surprisingly, foreign 
visitors shunned the country, as genocide, not gorillas, became closely associated 
with Rwanda in people's minds.
