FOUR parcels containing 24 turtles and a skink, bound for Japan, have been
discovered at a mail centre in Perth.
West Australian Environment Minister Judy Edwards said International Post
Perth discovered the packages during routine screenings of outgoing mail
at the Perth International Mail Centre on Wednesday.
When the packages were opened, 13 of the protected Oblong turtles, which
were tightly wrapped in socks, were dead.
Customs and the Department of Conservation and Land Management were
immediately notified.
"Turtles are protected fauna and it is an offence under the Wildlife
Conservation Act to take them from the wild without authority," Dr Edwards
said.
"Illegal export of wildlife is often a very cruel practice, as many of the
offenders ignore the health and well-being of the animals by packing them
tightly in small containers with insufficient air, food and water.
