But no word on when live cattle can cross

By CP

WASHINGTON -- Agriculture Minister Bob Speller says his U.S. counterpart
assured him yesterday that a decision on resuming the live cattle trade will be
based on science, not politics. But it's still unclear how long a decision will
take. A public comment period on dropping the U.S. ban is due to end April 7
and American officials will have to review what they've received.
"All indications are, in fact, that they should be able to reopen that
border" when the review is finished, said Speller.
Canada will be submitting its own comments in a few days. Speller said he
pressed Agriculture Secretary Ann Veneman for speedy consideration of allowing
trade of all cattle, not just those under 30 months of age.
"I believe that the science suggests the border should be wide open. We will
be pressuring the government here to do exactly that."
