Australia's peak research body is still deciding whether to set guidelines
which will pave the way for more research into animal to human transplants.
The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) has been holding
public meetings around Australia into the contentious issue of
xenotransplantation.
The NHMRC roadshow attracted more than 400 participants.
The council is charged with deciding whether ethical guidelines are
necessary, a key precursor to further research into the issue.
Jack Sparrow, chairman of the NHMRC's Xenotransplantation Working Party,
said xenotransplantation had become a focus in recent years because of the
sizeable gap between the number of available donors and demand.
