With the life expectancy of zoo animals increasing thanks to advances in
veterinary science, zoos in Japan are confronted with the problem of what to do
with their aging animals.
On a recent day at Inokashira Park Zoo in Musashino, western Tokyo, children
waited in line in front of the elephant cage with bread rolls in their hands.
Two years ago, the zoo began letting visitors, many of them parents and
children, feed Hanako, an old elephant. For a 250 yen fee, the visitors can enter
the elephant house and feed Hanako her favorite food, bread. They also are
allowed to touch the elephant and have their photos taken with her.
