AR-News: (Japan) Nation's zoos face responsibility of looking after aging animals

With the life expectancy of zoo animals increasing thanks to advances in 
veterinary science, zoos in Japan are confronted with the problem of what to do 
with their aging animals. 
On a recent day at Inokashira Park Zoo in Musashino, western Tokyo, children 
waited in line in front of the elephant cage with bread rolls in their hands. 
Two years ago, the zoo began letting visitors, many of them parents and 
children, feed Hanako, an old elephant. For a 250 yen fee, the visitors can enter 
the elephant house and feed Hanako her favorite food, bread. They also are 
allowed to touch the elephant and have their photos taken with her.
