A CONTROLLED burn may have killed a breeding pair of one of Victoria's most
critically endangered species.

Outraged residents of Rawson, north of Moe, claim the Department of
Sustainability and Environment knew about the rare spot-tailed quolls, but went ahead
with the fuel reduction.
Last Friday's burn was in an area used by a wildlife refuge to reintroduce
hundreds of injured native animals.
Wallabies, wombats, sugar gliders and koalas were among the other species
released into the area.
Locals claimed they were told the fire, which was still smoking yesterday,
would reach just 1m off the ground, but instead scorched the trunks of mature
trees.
