CANBERRA - Animal-rights activists have launched a global boycott of Tasmania
in a bid to force the island state to stop clear-felling ancient forests and
using 1080 to control wildlife in commercial plantations.
The campaign coincides with growing environmental pressure that threatens to
put forest clearance on the political agenda as Australia heads towards a
federal election by the end of the year.
Similar pressure forced the protection of the Franklin River in the 1980s,
and Labor Leader Mark Latham is already trying to manage the sensitive political
balance between the competing demands of the island's big blue-collar logging
industry and a Green lobby that is likely to become a crucial factor in the
election.
