MUSCATINE, Iowa — City officials are considering allowing bow hunting inside
city limits to keep the deer population from growing.
.
Greg Harris, a deer depredation biologist with the Iowa Department of Natural
Resources, or DNR, told the Muscatine City Council that in a 19.5 square-mile
area in and around Muscatine he recently counted 178 deer.
.
Harris said the U.S. 61 Bypass goes through deer habitat and the numbers will
only grow if the city doesn’t take steps to maintain the numbers.
.
“It won’t get any better,” Harris said. “If you don’t do anything, the
numbers will get too high and then you will need to reduce (the deer population)
with firearms. Why wait until there is a major problem?”
