ST. PAULS - A representative from the People for the Ethical Treatment of
Animals tossed the county's animal pound a few bones following a tour of
the facility in February.
But Daphna Nachminovitch, director of animal issues and abuse for PETA, in
a written report that the county recently received, rolled up a newspaper
and smacked the pound on the nose for perceived problems.
It doesn't appear, however, that the county Health Department is going to
heel to PETA's commands.
Last week, Nachminovitch, who visited the pound the first week of
February, sent a 10-page report to Bill Smith, the county's Health
Department director, praising the pound for improvements but chastising it
for shortcomings such as using dry food instead of canned.
