[opinion from The Robesonian]
PETA is easy to pick on.
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals did, after all, advise college
students that beer was a healthier beverage choice than milk. And the
organization laments fishing, saying those slippery souls suffer too much
when jerked face first from an ocean, lake or river. (We wonder if a fish
prefers being devoured alive by another fish than a death at the hands of
a pot-bellied fisherman who is drinking a Budweiser.)
Closer to home, it wasn't long ago that PETA offered a $2,500 reward for
information leading to the capture of whoever tortured a kitten before
setting it on fire. While we would love to see these cowardly juveniles
brought to justice, $2,500 to catch a few teenage delinquents in an effort
to make a point seems a gratuitous waste of money for a cash-needy
organization committed to improving the plight of animals.
Like so many well-intentioned animal rights organizations, PETA gets
sidetracked worrying about the individual animal while paying little
attention to animal populations. Some will find it ironic, but hunters and
fishermen, by raising and contributing money to secure habitats, do much
more to protect at-risk species than groups like PETA. But that's a
different editorial.
