{1} DIET OF DEATH: HIGH PROTEIN CRAZE
Two Hour Special Report - part 2
Joel Fuhrman, M.D., author of Eat to Live
with testimony of Jody Gorran, Atkins Diet survivor

"Vegetarianism is unhealthy."
"Humans need protein, and lots of it."
"Put down those sprouts and pick up a T-bone!"
--- Michael Moore in his latest book, "Dude, Where's My Country?"

GO VEGAN TEXAS!
Today from 11am - 1pm (CST)
90.1 FM-Houston and 89.5 FM-Galveston

"People are desperate to lose weight and these high protein diet books
preach what people want to hear: you can eat lots of cholesterol and
saturated fat and still lose weight. This romance can lead to tragic
consequences, with some people literally dying to lose weight." --- Joel
Fuhrman, Family Physician and author, Eat to Live

"The Atkins diet gave me heart disease. For two and a half years that I was
on the diet, I was extolling its virtues to literally anybody who I came
across. The problem was I kept doing that up until the point that I was
diagnosed with heart disease."
--- Jody Gorran at a news conference, National Press Club in Washington,
D.C., November 20, 2003

"For me, being a vegan is as logical as not smoking, practicing safe sex,
and driving with my seat belt on. This is not about ideology or opinion ‹
the numbers are in and eating animals is out...(yet)...Americans are
over-consuming blood, bone, fat, and muscle in a big way and this nasty
little secret has not only helped bring us a virtual holocaust of heart
disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes, it affects the entire world as we
know it."
-- Mickey Z, writer in Satya, "Eat Tofu, Save the World"

Jody Gorran went on the Atkins Diet in December 2000. A heart scam revealed
the now 53 year old businessman had a healthy heart and no medical problems
before embarking on a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. But after more
than two years on this diet, he began experiencing angina. Gorran discovered
that his cholesterol had shot from a pre-diet level of 146 to 230. An
angiogram showed a severe artery blockage, and Gorran underwent angioplasty.
His cardiologist told him he could have died.

Lisa Huskey was happy about being on a diet with her 16-year-old daughter,
Rachel, until Rachel dropped dead from a heart arrhythmia in class. Lisa
says the high-fat, high-protein approach advocated by the Atkins diet was
responsible.

Gorran will talk about his brush with death in the first hour with our
guest: Joel Fuhrman, MD, author of Eat to Live:The Revolutionary Formula for
Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, the gold standard of books on diet and
weight loss. (Note: Dr. Fuhrman was a guest on our February 23 show: Eat
to Live: a Life Plan not a Diet). Today, Dr. Fuhrman will examine the Atkins
and other popular diets that are incredibly high in saturated fat and whose
menus for their devotees prohibit and restrict the foods known to offer
powerful protection against cancer and heart disease. Dr. Fuhrman believes
these diets go against all the leading research linking diet and disease.

John Rose, Houston wellness consultant and member of our Go Vegan Texas!
Collective, Committee on Health and Nutrition, will co host today's expanded
two hour show. Your calls to Dr. Fuhrman and Jody Gorran are most welcome.
You can call the studio line: (713) 526-5738.

{2} BIZARRO: DAN PIRARO WITH ASHLEY LOU SMITH, RIC O'BARRY & LISA FRANZETTA

Watchdog -- Monday, March 22: Dan Piraro, creator of the syndicated Bizarro
cartoon, will be my guest in the studio with his wife Ashley Lou Smith. He
referred to Smith, upon accepting his Genesis Award on Saturday night, as
his "muse and mentor."
She is an animal rights activist, particularly active on Farm Sanctuary's
anti-veal campaigns.

Bizarro is a syndicated newspaper cartoon that appears in approximately 200
newspapers around the world. The cartoon looks at all walks of life, but
since Piraro is an outspoken vegan activist, it often addresses animal
issues. We will be chatting with Piraro about some of his cartoons and the
issues behind them.

Two areas to which Piraro has recently turned his attention are the use of
captive dolphins for entertainment and fur as fashion. Joining us to talk
about those issues:

-- Ric O'Barry, who was Flipper's trainer and now fights marine mammal
captivity

and

-- Lisa Franzetta, an anti-fur activist with PETA.

Watchdog is produced by Janee Taylor and hosted by Karen Dawn. It airs
Mondays at 2pm on KPFK, 90. 7 in Los Angeles and San Diego, and 98.7 in
Santa Barbara. If you are not in range you can listen live on line at 2pm US
Pacific Time, 5pm Eastern: http://www.KPFK.org

We almost always take callers (last week was the exception) and would love
your participation. The call-in number is: (818) 985-5735. That's (818) 985
KPFK

Listen if you can, and please send comments to Watchdog at KPFK.org . (I send a
huge thank you to those who already have.)
Watchdog is a 13 week series. Positive feedback will make it more likely
that Pacifica will eventually put an animal issues series on the air
permanently.
