Animal rights protesters said yesterday that they plan to target a new
research laboratory at Oxford University as an extension to their campaign which
forced primate experimentation at Cambridge to be scrapped.
A university spokesman confirmed yesterday that an £18 million science
facility currently being built at Oxford would use animals for testing. He insisted
that work would not be delayed by the threat of civil disobedience and
intimidation by anti-vivisection protesters.
A coalition of animal rights groups said Oxford would become the new focus of
their campaign after plans for a multi-million-pound laboratory at Cambridge
were abandoned because of the excessive costs of protecting staff from
activists.
Brain Cass, the managing director of the Huntingdon Life Sciences research
company, based on the outskirts of Cambridge, said the decision to scrap the
laboratory was a victory for a "very small number of militants".
