BLACK FOREST - Charlie may well be the world's only seeing-eye steer.
He's the guide and constant companion of Annie, a 20-year-old blind mule.

Charlie and Annie are permanent residents of Black Forest Animal Sanctuary, a
nonprofit rescue organization that's also home to 20-some horses, several
goats and an ever-changing number of dogs and cats.
"We'll even take in exotic animals until we can figure out what to do with
them," says Tracy Hudock, a director of the organization.
Annie was nursing a broken shoulder and bound for the slaughterhouse when
BFAS volunteers spotted her and bought her. She'd lived at the ranch for over a
year before she met Charlie.
One-year-old Charlie grew up at a nearby cattle ranch. For whatever reason,
he was unable to nurse from his mother, and so he was hand-raised and
bottle-fed. Hudock is convinced Charlie grew up thinking he's a dog, not a steer, and
he's not at all shy around people. He strolls right up to strangers, looking
for a pat on the head and a scratch behind the ear.
