FEDERAL and state governments favour the live animal export trade and erect
barriers to exports of processed meat, a report commissioned by the West
Australian Government warns.
The scathing report, by the ministerial taskforce into cattle and sheepmeat
processing in Western Australia, was delivered in December to state Agriculture
Minister Kim Chance, who is still considering his response. The report
questions the number of jobs created by the live export trade.
Government and industry claim 9000 jobs have been created by the trade, which
has grown rapidly in the past decade, but the report found exporters of live
animals employ "relatively small numbers of staff".
The report found governments distorted the competition between the live
export trade and processed meat exporters by subjecting the processed meat sector
to taxes and charges not levied on live exporters, and by requiring higher
standards of the processed meat sector.
