A meat-packing plant capable of processing 1,000 head of beef cattle a day
could find its way to the area around Bowling Green.
A North Carolina meat packer and consultant told area legislators and Farm
Bureau representatives last week the Bowling Green area "would keep the
supply area for the plant within the optimum 300- to 400-mile radius of the
plant."
Jack Gartner of Asheville, N.C. said a plant close to Interstate 65 and
close to a concentration of beef producers would make the state a hub,
"giving you the ability for overnight meat deliveries to over 65 percent of
the nation's population within an 8- to 9-hour drive."
Gartner told the group, including Sen. Virgil Moore and Sen. Richie Sanders,
that building such a plant would cost $27.5 million, but he estimated
farmers supplying the plant "would see savings of $25 to $30 (in shipping
and weight loss costs)"
