If you haven't already tucked into a plate of bacon and eggs by the time
you read this, it might interest you to know that Saturday is the "Great
American Meatout," a celebration designed to spread good health by asking
people to give up meat for an entire day.
According to information provided on the Web site www.meatout.org, a day's
menu might include cereal with soy milk for breakfast, a veggie burger or
salad for lunch and pasta with a meatless sauce and garlic bread for supper.
"If people can jump in for a day, they learn there are a plethora of
options," said Bruce Friedrich, vegan campaign director with People for
the Ethical Treatment of Animals. "When people are eating meat, they're
eating rotting, decomposing corpses -- what could be more revolting than
that?"
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Meatout and Friedrich said the
primary obstacle to vegetarian diets is the unwillingness of most people
to even consider the issue after a lifetime of eating meat.
