A SPATE of horse tail thefts in a Toowoomba suburb is more than likely the
work of "professionals" looking to sell the tails on the horse show circuit's
black market, according to an RSPCA inspector.
RSPCA Toowoomba inspector Warren Huggins said there had been three separate
incidents of horses having their tails chopped off in late night raids on
Middle Ridge properties last week.
Mr Huggins said the tails would probably be sold to owners of show horses to
be used as horse tail extensions.
"If a horse has poor tail that is not thick or healthy enough they can use
hair extensions just like humans do to make them look better," he said.
Extensions usually sold for about $250 each, meaning each tail could fetch up
to $1000.
