U.S. mental health official to speak here

The University of Texas Mental Sciences Institute at Houston will host Dr. Thomas Insel, director of the National Institute of Mental Health, 4 p.m. March 24, in Room 3.001 of The University of Texas Medical School at Houston, 6431 Fannin.

Insel will discuss "Social Neuroscience: A New Basic Science for Psychiatry" as part of the 12th Annual Harold Cooper Lectureship, presented by the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences.

The mission of NIMH, Insel has said, is to reduce the burden of mental illness and behavioral disorders through research on mind, brain and behavior.

Insel was named to head NIMH in 2002 after serving as professor of psychiatry and as the director of the Center for Behavioral Neuroscience at Emory University in Atlanta, which he joined in 1994. Insel is well known for initiating some of the first treatment trials for obsessive-compulsive disorder using serotonin reuptake inhibitors.

The World Health Organization's Global Burden of Disease study reported that mental disorders represent four of the top five sources of premature death and disability for people in the Western world aged 15 to 44. "Schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, autism and other mental disorders are serious, often life-threatening illnesses for which we need reliable diagnostic tests, new treatments and effective strategies for prevention," Insel said.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

Parking is available in medical center Garages 4 and 7, or attendees can ride the MetroRail, which makes scheduled stops in front of the medical school.
