Kenya proposes to reduce the size of several national parks to create land 
for needy communities.
Targeted are Tsavo National Park, The Abedares, Lake Nakuru, Meru and Shimba 
Hills National Reserve. According to a provision in the draft constitution 
that has already been adopted by delegates, boundaries of this parks and reserves 
will be reduced to create more land for adjacent communities.
Adoption of Article 87(6)(xiv) follows intense pushing by communities from 
the Coast and some parts of the Rift Valley provinces to have the boundaries 
reduced.
Prof Saleh Faad Yahya, who facilitated the talks at the Committee on Land 
Rights and Environment, says a number of national parks have boundaries which 
were drawn by colonialists when the populations in those areas was very small.
