Kenya proposes to reduce the size of several national parks to create land
for needy communities.
Targeted are Tsavo National Park, The Abedares, Lake Nakuru, Meru and Shimba
Hills National Reserve. According to a provision in the draft constitution
that has already been adopted by delegates, boundaries of this parks and reserves
will be reduced to create more land for adjacent communities.
Adoption of Article 87(6)(xiv) follows intense pushing by communities from
the Coast and some parts of the Rift Valley provinces to have the boundaries
reduced.
Prof Saleh Faad Yahya, who facilitated the talks at the Committee on Land
Rights and Environment, says a number of national parks have boundaries which
were drawn by colonialists when the populations in those areas was very small.
