WASHINGTON — Rep. Chris John’s efforts to protect
Louisiana’s cockfighting industry helped rate him
among the worst legislators on animal welfare issues
last year, an official with the Humane Society of the
United States said Tuesday.

The group released its annual ratings of lawmakers on
animal protection issues last year.

Louisiana lawmakers as a group were rated among the
worst in the country, with scores from 11 percent to
33 percent.

John, D-Crowley, scored 11 percent by opposing the
group in eight areas, including voting against
legislation to spend $800,000 to enforce a law that
bans interstate transport of fighting dogs and
gamecocks.

Other Louisiana congressmen also scored 11 percent,
including Democratic Rep. Rodney Alexander and
Republican Reps. Richard H. Baker and Billy Tauzin.

John defended his vote.

“It creates a positive economic impact, and frankly,
it’s a states’ rights issue,” he said.
