Almost half the panther population in the Borivali National Park has been
relocated to the Tansa and Phansad wildlife sanctuaries. The deputy conservator
of forests, A R Bharati, in-charge of the National Park, said the move came in
the wake of repeated panther attacks in the last one year.
Since there are no residential areas around Tansa and Phansad, officials feel
the move could work. Bharati says that as per the animal census in April
2003, there were 42 panthers in the National Park. In the last one year, 26
panthers have been released in the Tansa and Phansad sanctuaries.
There have been repeated complaints from complexes in the Aarey Milk Colony
and IIT, Powai, about panthers, which enter the premises and attack people.
“After capturing them, the forest officers had to relocate them in the Tansa
and Phansad sanctuaries. They couldn’t be released back in Borivali, because
of the proximity to residential areas,” says Bharati.
