AR-News: (AU) Zoo under fire over elephant import

SYDNEY'S plan to import four highly endangered Asian elephants from Thailand.

The Humane Society International (HSI) has joined other welfare and 
conservation groups in opposing the move, which would replace two Asian elephants being 
moved to the Western Plains Zoo. 
HSI said the zoo plans to import a total of nine Asian elephants in 
conjunction with Melbourne and Auckland zoos. 
The $40 million Asian Elephant Rainforest, which includes a multi-species 
display, is currently under construction and is due to open at Taronga Zoo in 
April next year.
HSI said the group did not believe Australian zoos could meet the behavioural 
and biological needs of the Asian elephant
