SOME dogs turn the well-known saying, ?barking dogs, seldom bite? upon its
head. When in Ethiopia we had one such dog that terrified friend and foe alike.
The pup arrived at our doorstep whining out of hunger and out of kindness we
let him in. How we regretted that act!
He had inherited that rare affliction among dogs that caused them to seldom
bark but oh, how they could bite! He and his kind caused a reversal of that
well-known saying and altered it to ?biting dogs, seldom bark?. At that point of
history, American forces were hell-bent on drowning Fidel Castro and his
island. And in admiration of Fidel?s courage we named the pup, Cuba.
With good food and care, Cuba grew up fast with his nasty temper intact. For
no reason whatsoever he would without warning, take a nip at strangers when
they entered our compound. Soon Cuba and our family become notorious in our
corner of Addisababa.
