THE RSPCA has stopped inviting politicians to be its patrons because of Prime
Minister John Howard's continued support of the live sheep trade.
Patronage of the animal welfare organisation will instead be reserved for
"eminent Australians", RSPCA national president Dr Hugh Wirth said yesterday.
"A decision was taken to no longer elect the prime minister or leader of the
opposition, whoever they were, to be patrons - in other words drop them, and
to only have eminent Australians," Dr Wirth said.
Mr Howard, who will lose his patronage of the RSPCA when he leaves The Lodge,
remains committed to live sheep exports, despite concerns about the practice.
The trade has been the target of a campaign by the RSPCA since the Cormo
Express was stranded at sea last year with more than 50,000 sheep
