BEIJING - China declared itself free of human cases of avian flu Tuesday, the 
same day that a Thai factory worker became the 23rd person in Asia to die of 
the disease this winter.

Officials in Thailand believe the 39-year-old woman contracted the disease 
from chickens being kept in a neighbour's house. 
Thailand declared itself free of the H5N1 strain of bird flu early last week, 
but was forced to backtrack a few days later after new cases in chickens 
cropped up.
