Animal liberationists accused the federal government of lying over the health
of 57,000 sheep stranded aboard a ship in the Middle East for two months.
A report compiled by Ralph Hahnheuser, who is facing criminal charges after
allegedly feeding ham to sheep destined for Kuwait last year, claims official
mortality figures contradict statements made by Agriculture Minister Warren
Truss during the Cormo Express affair.
But Mr Truss hit back, saying animal liberationists were distorting the facts
as part of their campaign to sabotage the live animal export trade.
The Cormo Express and its cargo of 57,000 sheep were rejected by Saudi Arabia
on disease grounds last August.
After they had been two months at sea, the government donated the sheep to
the nation of Eritrea.
