Wildlife officials believe malnutrition, being tranquilized for an
extended period of time and, possibly, the effects of a parasite likely led to the
death Sunday of a bull moose in Toll Canyon near Parleys Summit.
The 2 1/2-year-old moose was tranquilized by Utah Division of Wildlife
Resources (DWR) officials on March 3 after attacking and trampling a snowshoer.
Salt Lake City resident Nick Baldwin, 65, suffered a broken shoulder blade and
a leg injury, which required surgery.
Biologists tranquilized the moose for about 90 minutes to allow medical
technicians to get Baldwin out of the canyon.
"He [the moose] was immobilized longer than we normally leave them
tranquilized and that can cause all kinds of problems for them," said Jim Karpowitz,
chief of big game for the DWR. "It looks like to me that it was a combination
of that and being in poor condition that did him in."
