The SPCA is looking for a dog owner accused of punishing a dog by dragging it
behind a car at up to 80km/h.
Bay of Islands SPCA spokeswoman Gail Boyd said officers were investigating an
incident in which a German shepherd/huntaway cross dog was allegedly tied to
a car and dragged at 60-80km/h at Rawhiti, 34km northeast of Russell, last
month.
"My understanding, and we haven't spoken to the owner yet, is that the dog
had gotten off his chain and ran away and this was a form of punishment," Mrs
Boyd said.
The dog suffered serious injuries, including broken bones and skin scraped
off parts of his leg and body.
"How a dog is supposed to understand this is punishment is beyond
comprehension," Mrs Boyd said.
The alleged cruelty was witnessed by a number of people who had confirmed the
details, Mrs Boyd said.
The dog was brought in to the Bay of Islands SPCA about 10 days ago, when it
was found wandering and injured.
Mrs Boyd said there was initially a risk of blood poisoning due to the
exposure of bone, but the dog was now out of danger and should fully recover.
Charges were likely, Mrs Boyd said.
The incident is one of three serious cases investigated by the Bay of Islands
SPCA in the past three weeks.
