Indianapolis, March 15 - Dog fighting in Indianapolis is now a Class D
felony. Owners train their canines to attack and kill, no exceptions.
That's something police and some pet owners just can't imagine.
Patrick Willis is a pet owner. "I think the animals give us so much, and for
that kind of behavior to occur, I can't believe it still exists in our day and
time."
"Imagine the power in the jaws of a pitbull that is trained to do nothing but
to fight and kill. It's scary." Indianapolis Police Chief Jerry Barker teamed
up with animal control to announce Canine CrimeStoppers. Now, you can call
CrimeStoppers anonymously to turn in dog fighters.
Lt. Dave Walker with CrimeStoppers says, "That's what it is. It's a blood
sport, so that we can get a handle on it before it does spiral out of control."
"It's one of those 'under the radar' blood sports that people engage in,"
says Barker.
In January of this year, animal control officers confiscated some pitbulls
that were at a house where investigators believe the owners were training them
for dog fighting.
Some of the tell tale signs of dog fighting include bite marks, scars,
cropped ears and puncture wounds.
