WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Sen. Max Baucus, the ranking Democrat on the
Senate Finance Committee, said on Monday that Japan's reluctance to resume
U.S. beef shipments because of mad cow disease concerns could lead to a
bigger trade conflict with Washington.

Japan, the biggest buyer of American beef, halted shipments in late
December after the discovery of the first U.S. case of mad cow disease in
a Washington state dairy cow. Since then, Tokyo has indicated it wants the
United States to test for mad cow disease all 35 million head of cattle
slaughtered each year.

The Montana Democrat, speaking to reporters in a teleconference from
China, said he met with Japanese government officials on Sunday.
