At Vilas Zoo, one day they're training chimps to let them examine their toes
and the next they're teaching preschoolers about how a dominant chimp tries to
calm others down after a fight.
While Tori Kaldenberg and other zookeepers enjoy talking to visitors, their
behind-the-scenes work takes priority. And yet, zoos are about education, so
the staff offers information through signs and displays, including in the
Discovering Primates Complex where Kaldenberg works. These are not cheap - a static
display runs a couple thousand dollars.
The Myrtle Tilker estate and the staff of American TV helped Kaldenberg try a
different approach: a high-definition TV with a touchscreen to let visitors
trigger videos on a range of topics about primates. The interactive setup takes
the spot of an old TV that had shown a film on researcher Jane Goodall and
chimpanzees in the wild.
