Humane Society President Gives 'State of the Animal' Address; Challenges
Silicon Valley Companies to Help Community Reduce Unnecessary Pet Euthanasia

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 15, 2004--Humane Society Silicon
Valley (HSSV) President Christine Benninger today called on Silicon Valley's
technology companies to help the community reduce pet overpopulation and
unnecessary pet euthanasia. Benninger issued the challenge during remarks she gave
at her first Annual 'State of the Animal' Address this morning.

"The good news is that fewer unwanted animals are entering our shelter and
more animals than ever before are finding loving homes," Benninger said. "Last
year, some 27,000 animals came to our shelter, 40 percent less than 10 years
ago. Nearly 7,100 or 99 percent of our adoptable animals found loving homes --
more than any other animal care facility in the Bay Area," Benninger explained.
But she said while animal welfare agencies have made huge strides, much
remains to be done to improve the state of the animal in Silicon Valley and beyond.
Last year, some 50,000 pets were euthanized in the Bay Area, a number that
Benninger calls "downright appalling." At Humane Society Silicon Valley, which
took in nearly 27,000 lost or abandoned animals, 14,097 animals were
euthanized. In the United States, six to eight million animals are euthanized each year.
