Wildlife protection groups are preparing a legal appeal against the Federal
Government's kangaroo management plans in Queensland, South Australia and
Western Australia.
This year's commercial kangaroo harvest quota is more than four million
animals which the Environment Minister David Kemp says is about 30 per cent lower
than last year.
But Pat O'Brien from Queensland's Wildlife Protection Association is
appealing against the decision on the grounds that it is cruel.
"It's certainly a really important case for us because the Appeals Tribunal
will need to make a decision on whether a code of practice that permits a gross
cruelty to young animals, whether that's in the interests of the rest of
Australia," he said.
