Hunters in Beauregard Parish are preparing for the opening of turkey season.
David Liles, Senior Agent with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and
Fisheries, said there are new regulations to be aware of.
"The entire parish will be open to turkey hunting this season for the first
time in five years," said Liles. "Hickory Creek and Bear Head Creek are two of
the areas that have been restocking the past few years. The only areas open
previously were east of Hwy. 171. There are pamphlets available with new
regulations hunters need to be aware of so they are not cited."
The 2004 turkey hunting season is March 27 through April 25. Shooting hours
are from thirty minutes before sunrise to thirty minutes after sunset.
Hunters are required to have a turkey stamp in their possession while hunting
in addition to basic and big game hunting licenses. A WMA Hunting Permit is
required for anyone who hunts in Wildlife Management Areas, Wildlife Refuges,
Habitat Conservation Areas and any land administered by the Department of
Wildlife and Fisheries.
