It's called animal hoarding. That's when someone has so many animals that
they can't be cared for properly and often end up in filthy. Animal control
officers in San Juan County found 30 dead dogs and 23 starving ones at one man's
property recently. In Dona Ana County, a woman had 38 dogs who were infected
with mange and bites from fighting each other. Valencia County authorities say
they found 86 Pomeranians this week after neighbors complained of the stench.
Animal hoarding isn't against the law in New Mexico, although

the associated animal cruelty is. Signs of hoarding include secretive
lifestyles, so they won't be discovered, and a refusal to part with the animals.
