A wolf manager wearing a gray Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks shirt would be
a symbolic step for wolf recovery, and it may happen soon in Northwest
Montana.
Not only might the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hand over a wolf job to the
state, but also the authority to monitor and manage the region's wolves, even
though they have yet to be removed from the Endangered Species list.
"We've been discussing with [the state] some type of cooperative arrangement
where instead of me paying someone to do it, I'll pay the state to have
someone do it," said Ed Bangs, wolf recovery coordinator for the Fish and Wildlife
Service.
The move raises many questions for state officials, and concerns for
environmental groups that contend the federal government is prematurely abdicating its
responsibilities to protect wolf populations.
