The following is posted on behalf of Alianca International do Animal
(AILA), São Paulo, Brazil.

A holocaust is happening in the Sao Paulo, Brazil zoo
Beginning on Jan. 24, animals began to be poisoned at the zoo. 66 animals
being an elephant, dromedaries , chimpanzees , porcupines, antas, snake,
birds, monkeys, tapir, snake and birds have been poisoned with a prohibited
rat poison in Brazil containing large amounts of "mono fluoracetato" or
said by other newspaper " fluoracetato de sodio". On Feb 28th, 50 (fifty)
porcupines died but I guess they consider that 1 (one). Most of these
animals were in the restricted area of the zoo ------- not in exposition
for the public

The deaths of these animals began with the return of Paulo Bressan as
director of the zoo, a vetenarian who occupied political positions. (There
seems to have been a very strong dispute for this position) A friend to
the governor who stated "there is no reason to temporarily close the zoo
since it is an internal problem". The police maintain silence of the
hypothesis of the motive of these crimes

This situation and others could be more seriously resolved if AILA could
afford a "good" lawyer.
Also there is a need for a reward to be put out for the information which
would lead to the convictment of the real criminal.

AILA is asking for help from the animal rights community to resolve this
case. We need help securing finances so that we can seriously pursue this
issue. Please contact me with fundraising ideas or any other thoughts you
may have.

Thank you
Ila

AILA's history of success on behalf of animals
In 1997/8 I idialized, organized and concretisized the 1rst International
Congress for the wellbeing of animals in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

In 1999 I realized the need for an organization to expand the work as I
received a denouncement of an elephant being fiercely beaten up by circus
owners due to that she had killed her trainer who was drunk and shoving a
bucket of water into her trump shouting and forcing her to drink the water
while hitting her with the other hand. To follow this case litigiously,
"Alianca International do Animal" was established. It took until 2003 for
us to win this case federally. Alianca has considerably lead the way into
passing the law of no more animals in circuses in various municipalities
and in the states of Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro. In 2002 we also took
out 7 lions from a circus. We took them to a better zoo in the south and
paid to finish their enclosure with a pond.

After viewing the massacre of dogs and cats and seeing the lack of access
to a clinic or vet in the slums, we pioneered a Mobil Unit in Sao Paulo,
Brazil for free spay, neuter and education with the most advanced
technologies. We have traveled trough various municipalities and states
showing the advantages of sterilization and continuously teaching our
techniques to other veterinarians throughout Brazil.

In 2002 we ended the medieval decompression chamber in which the dogs/cats
were killed and brought in the "lethal Sodium Pentobarbital" more humane
method as an immediate alternative, but we are also fighting this today.

Alianca has proven how sterilization can work. Three years ago, the slum "
Paraisopolis" (approximately 70,000 inhabitants) was an ocean of
abandoned, diseased, hungry, shot, kicked, burned and buried alive
puppies/cats. Also due to our adoption program, averaging 350 to 400
adoptions/month, today there is rarely an abandoned dog/cat and the
domestic violence has dropped considerably for we are their alternative.

We are caring for over a thousand animals per month . This includes
spaying/neutering , vaccinations, treatments and food. We are paying 2
veterinarians, 2 assistance, 1 secretary, bookkeeper, 2 attendees , 8
general help,1 driver for the Mobil Unit and 1 car driver, and 1 affordable
lawyer.
