The man running Australia's live export trade to the Middle East and
Africa has a clear message: the $1 billion industry has been
misrepresented, and has a strong future.
...
More than 4.7 million sheep and 70,000 goats were sent live to the Middle
East last year. Most of the 774,000 live cattle went to Asia. However, the
live exports industry, which employs 9000 people in rural Australia, has
slumped since then.
...
If Australia stopped the trade, the Middle East would source the sheep and
goats from anywhere, including South America. "We are making slow
progress, but it will go backwards if we go away," he said.

Dr Brown said culturally the Middle East wanted live animals so that they
could be killed and the meat eaten fresh and warm. This was the legacy of
a nomadic life with no refrigeration, where meat festered in the heat.
