[from Globe and Mail]

We are all used to being advised that a particular diet is good for your
heart, another may prevent cancer and a third reduces the risk of
diabetes, but we may soon be told to eat certain foods to protect and
nurture our DNA.

A paper in the European Journal of Nutrition asks the question: "Does a
vegetarian diet influence genomic stability?" The answer is a confusing
mix of yes and no.

While the sample size is small -- 24 vegetarians and 24 non-vegetarians --
there does seem to be less DNA damage in people whose meals consist mainly
of nuts, grains, fruits and vegetables. This is important because, in a
general sense, damaged DNA has been linked to diseases such as cancer.
...
But the words "mainly vegetarian" may be the most important element in any
healthy DNA-diet equation.

When the Slovak scientists looked at their data, they found what appears
to be striking differences between types of vegetarians. Those who only
drank milk, in addition to their non-animal-product diet, had what looked
like significantly lower DNA damage than vegetarians whose diets also
included eggs.
