CORNING — A "large number" of starving cattle, goats, horses and pigs
confiscated from a ranch west of here 11 days ago appear to be recovering, a Tehama
County district attorney's investigator said Friday.
But a "substantial number" of other animals died apparently from malnutrition
before investigators from the county's animal control department and district
attorney's office were alerted to their plight, said investigator Randy Knox.
"I wouldn't say this was at the top of the list, but I would say it was
probably in the category of some of the worst ones I've seen," he said.
Although he said "in excess of 75 cattle" were found dead, Knox declined to
give exact numbers of dead and ailing animals. Citing the ongoing
investigation, he also declined to name the ranch where they were found.
