More than 75 head of cattle are found dead near Corning

March 13, 2004 — 2:07 a.m.
CORNING — A "large number" of starving cattle, goats, horses and pigs 
confiscated from a ranch west of here 11 days ago appear to be recovering, a Tehama 
County district attorney's investigator said Friday. 
But a "substantial number" of other animals died apparently from malnutrition 
before investigators from the county's animal control department and district 
attorney's office were alerted to their plight, said investigator Randy Knox. 
"I wouldn't say this was at the top of the list, but I would say it was 
probably in the category of some of the worst ones I've seen," he said. 
Although he said "in excess of 75 cattle" were found dead, Knox declined to 
give exact numbers of dead and ailing animals. Citing the ongoing 
investigation, he also declined to name the ranch where they were found.
