AR-News: (Thailand) Watch what you feed dogs and cats, vets warn

Though it remains unproved whether local dry pet food is to blame for the 
increased rate of kidney failure among young dogs and cats, owners are advised to 
pay more attention to what their pets are fed. 
"It's a simple rule: cats' and dogs' kidneys can be affected by ingested 
toxins just like ours," said Professor Narongsak Chaiyabutr, dean of Chulalongkorn 
University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. 
He said the long-term salt intake commonly believed linked to kidney disease 
in humans was one risk factor. 
Sakol Jeraja, who feeds a huge number of stray dogs and cats, said some of 
the dogs had kidney trouble even though they were not fed dry food, as did the 
cats, which depended largely on dry food. 
She assumed it was because of the salt content of both.
