Two Ohio zoos are busy planning for new additions to their pachyderm
exhibits. What's still unknown is when that will happen.
The "additions" are a baby Sumatran rhinoceros at the Cincinnati Zoo and a
baby elephant at the Columbus Zoo.
A Sumatran rhinoceros that made news in 2001 by becoming the first member of
the endangered species since 1889 to successfully reproduce in captivity is
pregnant again and is expected to deliver in July, Cincinnati Zoo officials said
Thursday.
And the expected arrival of a baby Asian elephant within the next two months
would be the Columbus Zoo's first elephant birth, zoo officials said.
