Camrose bureau
NISKU, Alta. - They may not drive the fanciest trucks in their
neighbourhoods, but three farmers on an agricultural panel say changes have made their farms
richer in more than monetary ways.
Don Ruzicka of Killam, Hyland Armstrong of Cypress Hills and Larry Kitz of
Two Hills all said changes to develop wildlife habitat have diversified the
crops they grow and have led to a healthier environment for plants, animals and
themselves.
"People tell us we've accepted a lower standard of living, but we've come to
accept a higher quality of life. We don't shoot for the material things," said
Ruzicka, an organic grain producer who spoke to a Biodiversity in Agriculture
conference.
Ruzicka, a third generation farmer, said when he moved back to the farm in
1983, it was alive with grouse, pheasants, partridges and deer. The dairy cattle
were named after the wildflowers that grew on the farm.
