“This is also a way for government to reduce its spending,” Kedikilwe said.
He said the re-opening of the abattoir could reduce government spending on
programmes such as namola leuba (drought relief), and destitution would be
reduced.
He added that other abattoirs such as the Francistown abattoir are too far,
for cattle farmers in the northwest region, adding that these farmers cannot
reach it.
He said even those who are able to sell their livestock at other abattoirs,
end up not getting enough money due to the condition of the cattle when they
reach the abattoir as a result of the long journey.
He suggested that consideration for diversifying animals slaughtered at the
abattoir to include wild animals, and donkeys was necessary, so the abattoir is
not left idle.
