LOS ANGELES - Biologists working to save California condors from extinction
believe three pairs of the giant birds have produced eggs in the wild and a
fourth pair is expected to produce one soon, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service
said Thursday.
Only one egg laid in the nests in the Southern California backcountry has
been visually confirmed, but the biologists believe the behavior of condor pairs
at two other nests indicates that eggs have been laid there as well. The
latter nests can't be observed because they are in caves.
If successful, the eggs would hatch in early April. The condors lay one egg
at a time.
