KORONADAL CITY - Fearing the extinction of a rare species of bat, environment
and local officials of a town in Central Mindanao have joined hands to
protect it against poachers.
Jim Sampulna, Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Central
Mindanao chief, said that his office, and the municipal and barangay officials in
Maitum town, Sarangani, recently agreed to put up measures that would prevent the
extinction of a rare fruit bat species found in the municipality.
Popularly called the giant golden-crowned flying fox (Acedoron jubatus),
Sampulna said it is the largest bat in the world that can be found only in the
Philippines.
With a wingspan of five feet or more, and weighing 1,200 grams or more (about
three pounds), the giant golden-crowned flying foxes are facing extinction
from food hunters.
